Lewisburg Children’s Museum creates Safe and Fun Halloween Activities

posted: October 14, 2020

The Lewisburg Children’s Museum (LCM) has lots happening to get families excited about Halloween. In partnership with the Bucknell University Chemistry Department, the Museum  is hosting a simulcast streaming of a “Halloween Chemistry Show” on Tuesday, October 27, at 6:00 pm. Additionally, the Museum will host a pumpkin decorating contest, with submissions required by Friday, October 30 and provide free activity kits created by the Bucknell University Student Government on Saturday, October 31.

“Previously, our Munchkins and Pumpkins Halloween event brought hundreds of visitors to the museum,” says LCM Education Director, Lindsey Walter. “But this year is different. We thought really hard about the ways we could keep children and families engaged AND safe.”

“We had tremendous success with our virtual Backyard Chemistry Show this summer,” adds Kahla DeSmit, LCM Managing Director. “The virtual format allows us to bring amazing science demonstrations to families in a safe and accessible way.”

The Virtual Halloween Chemistry Show will be available for viewing on the LCM’s Facebook Page.

“While we won’t be together in person this Fall,” says Patrick Martino, Bucknell University Chemistry Outreach Coordinator (aka “Science Pat”), “you’ll still be able to enjoy our classic halloween-themed chemistry demos such as: puking pumpkins, fire-breathing pumpkins, and self-carving pumpkins, all from the comfort of your living room. Our students have been hard at work planning, filming, and editing the demos for people of all ages to enjoy and are excited to highlight some new demos, including our largest puking pumpkin yet!”

In addition to the Halloween Chemistry Show, the LCM will be hosting a Pumpkin Decorating Contest. Registration and submissions are due on Friday, October 30 by 9:00 pm. Free pumpkins will be available for pick up in the LCM Courtyard starting October 27 while supplies last for this Museum-at-Home activity.

“Participants of the Pumpkin Decorating Contest are invited to stop by the LCM ‘Pumpkin Patch’ in our Courtyard, pick out a pumpkin, take it home to paint, carve, or decorate it, and send a photo of the completed creation to us,” says Walter. “Prize winners will be randomly selected for each age range.”

Throughout the week of October 25, the LCM will post Halloween themed craft and activities online. On Saturday, October 31, families are invited to stop by the LCM Courtyard during the Market Street Mask-A-Rade for free Halloween Activity Kits created by the Bucknell University Student Government.
