Susquehanna University’s Department of Theatre will present Anton Chekhov’s play “Uncle Vanya” at 8 p.m. Dec. 5–7 and at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 8 in Degenstein Center Theater.

The performance, directed by Assistant Professor of Theatre Anna Andes, will also feature Doug Powers, associate professor of theatre, in the title role of Vanya. Powers only joins the all-student cast for a show every few years.

Chekhov’s poignant play is both heartwarmingly funny and sad. “Uncle Vanya” follows the plight of a country estate and its inhabitants. The arrival of the estate’s owners, Professor Serebryakov and his young second wife, Yelena, causes unrest for Uncle Vanya and his niece, Sophia, who currently take care of the decaying estate. The crisis is further complicated when the professor decides to sell the estate.

“Anton Chekhov is one of the world’s most important playwrights,” Andes said. “This is an opportunity to see the amazing work of students and faculty.”

Tickets for the performance are $10 for adults, $7 for non-SU students and free for Susquehanna students. They can be purchased by visiting the university box office or calling 570-372-ARTS (2787) Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m.
